Pat Curry's Interview Shows Why We Need Real Change

Tuesday, October 15, 2024

Did you see Pat Curry's Waco Trib interview in Saturday's newspaper?  It shows why he is such an unqualified candidate to represent our community in the Texas House.

First, Curry claimed that the Republican voucher plan would allow students to “stay in your school district and apply to go to Texas State Technical College for classes or McLennan Community College for teaching or nursing classes or even Baylor for engineering classes.” This is not true.  None of the voucher bills presented in the last legislative session would allow students to receive voucher funds to attend college classes while also attending public schools, and Baylor, in particular, does not accept students who have not graduated from high school. Waco ISD schools already have dual credit programs that allow students to attend TSTC and MCC while still in high school. This misrepresentation shows a serious lack of understanding of the very laws he supports. Our kids deserve a representative who knows how to strengthen public education, not drain resources away from it.

Second, when asked about the total abortion ban and the fact that Texas has no exceptions for life or health of the mother, rape or incest, Mr. Curry said "I think there's been litigation over a few of those laws in how far this goes.  I don't know.  I haven't been involved in that....I've not been involved in that discussion."

We have mothers literally dying in their homes and in hospitals because doctors are afraid of going to prison for life if they treat them.   This is barbaric and must be addressed in the next legislative session in order to save women's lives, health and fertility.  I know this law, have studied this issue for decades and am willing to advocate for exceptions to save women's lives.

Third, Curry suggests that the Constitution grants local sheriffs some super power to enforce our immigration laws.  The editors have to actually insert a disclaimer stating that no such "super power" exists.

This is shameful.  We need a representative who is qualified on day one to represent this community in the Texas House.  As one of McLennan County's most senior attorneys, I assure you that I study the issues and know the law.  I have a copy of the Texas Constitution sitting on my desk and it certainly does not give sheriffs any immigration super power.

Vote Erin Shank for Texas House because we deserve better.
